In order to join MI6, you must be a British citizen and have lived in the UK for the majority of the 10 years prior to your application to join the agency. The easiest way to confirm your nationality is to have a UK passport that describes you as a British citizen.
The SIS, or Secret Intelligence Service, is the UK’s intelligence agency responsible for collecting foreign intelligence. While the SIS does have a reliance on UKSF, or United Kingdom Special Forces, for special operations, SIS operatives still receive training in the use of firearms, including pistols and submachine guns. However, it would be rare for an SIS intelligence officer to actually fire or even carry a firearm in the line of duty. This is because the focus of the SIS is intelligence gathering, not direct action. Therefore, while firearms training is still important for SIS operatives, it is not something that they are typically required to use in their day-to-day work.
